U.S. Politicians Ignore Fundamentals in Decarbonizing the Grid, Xcel Executive Says

By Dieter Holger

Politicians often get ahead of themselves on setting targets such as 2030 to decarbonize the grid, Xcel Energy Inc. Chief Customer Officer Brett Carter said.

Speaking at an Aspen Institute event in Miami Beach on Tuesday, Mr. Carter said that governors and mayors can ignore fundamentals on what resources are available and costs to consumers. The U.S. could get to a carbon-free energy grid in 2030 if it was the sole focus of the country and "we threw cost to the wind," he said.
