Manager James Anderson to Step Down from Vanguard International Growth in 2022; Ratings Unchanged

Analyst Note

| |

Subadvisor Baillie Gifford, which oversees roughly 60% of Vanguard International Growth’s assets, has announced that comanager James Anderson will retire in April 2022. While his presence will be missed, the firm was well-prepared for this eventuality. Anderson, a nearly 40-year veteran, gave plenty of notice of his intentions, consistent with Baillie Gifford’s thoughtful approach to succession planning. He stepped down as chair of the strategy’s portfolio construction group in July 2019, handing duties to comanager Tom Coutts. Coutts joined the firm in 1999 and has served on the portfolio construction group since 2008. The firm concurrently promoted Lawrence Burns to deputy chair. Burns, who joined the group in 2012, was named comanager in December 2020. The three have led their sleeve to stellar returns, picking up some of the world’s top-performing growth stocks early in the last bull market.
