Julie Utterback

Julie Utterback is a senior equity analyst for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. Within the healthcare industry, she covers medical technology and service companies. She is also the chairperson of the equity research team’s capital allocation methodology.

Utterback joined Morningstar in 2005 as an equity analyst in the healthcare industry. At that time, she covered medical technology companies, including orthopedic device, medical equipment, and cardiac device firms. In 2010, she joined Morningstar's credit research team, initiating coverage of the entire healthcare industry and generally helping the organization expand and maintain its credit coverage across many industries. She held that senior credit analyst role until April 2019, when she returned to the equity team to cover medical technology and service companies.

Prior to joining Morningstar, Utterback was an equity analyst at State Farm Insurance for several years. She holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation.

Leslie Norton

Leslie Norton is editorial director for sustainability at Morningstar.

Norton joined Morningstar in 2021 after a long career at Barron's Magazine and Barrons.com, where she managed the magazine's well-known Q&A feature and launched its sustainable investing coverage. Before that, she was Barron's Asia editor and mutual funds editor. While at Barron's, she won a SABEW "Best in Business" award for a series of stories investigating fraudulent Chinese equities, which protected the savings of investors and pensioners by warning about deceptive stocks before they crashed.

She holds a bachelor's degree from Yale College, where she majored in English, and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Alyssa Stankiewicz

Alyssa Stankiewicz is an ESG manager research analyst for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. She leads environmental, social, and governance research in North America, spearheading efforts on the ESG Commitment Level and publishing reports on the sustainable funds landscape.

Before joining Morningstar in 2019, Stankiewicz completed her Master of Business Administration in sustainable innovation at the University of Vermont, where she and her teammates won the inaugural Total Impact Portfolio Challenge. David Carey

Todd Trubey

Todd Trubey is a senior manager research analyst for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. He covers multi-asset and alternative fund strategies.

Before rejoining Morningstar in 2021, Trubey served as vice president of marketing and Analytics for Advisory Research and as vice president of portfolio strategies for Ariel Investments. In his previous stint with Morningstar, he worked in training and education and was a senior fund analyst.

Trubey holds a bachelor's degree in English from Sewanee: The University of the South and master's and doctorate degrees in English from Northwestern University.

Philip Straehl

Philip Straehl is head of capital markets and asset allocation for Morningstar’s Investment Management group. In his role, he oversees the group’s capital markets research and chairs the asset allocation committee. Additionally, he is chairman of the global capital markets and asset allocation best practice working group. Previously, he was portfolio manager and senior research responsible for managing asset allocation portfolios. He joined Morningstar in 2007.

His research has been published in the Financial Analysts Journal and a variety of media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, have featured his work.

Straehl holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland and a master’s degree in business administration, with honors, from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in analytic finance and economics.

Tom Nations

Tom Nations, CFP, is an associate director of multi-asset and alternative strategies for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc.

Before assuming his current role in 2021, Nations was a manager research analyst covering equity strategies. Prior to that, he spent more than five years working for a Chicago-based investment and financial advisory firm, conducting mutual fund and asset-class research to help build and review tailored asset allocations for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families.

Nations holds a bachelor's degree in business economics from Miami University's Farmer School of Business. He also holds the Certified Financial Planner™ designation.

Maciej Kowara

Maciej Kowara is an associate director of manager research - quantitative research for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. He specializes in active fixed-income funds.

Kowara has 20 years of investment industry experience. In 2016, he returned to Morningstar after spending four years as an asset-allocation portfolio manager for Aegon/Transamerica. Prior to that, he was a senior research consultant and portfolio manager at Morningstar Investment Services. Earlier in his career, he was vice president of the product analysis group at Deutsche Bank’s Scudder Investments and worked as a mutual fund analyst for Morningstar.

Kowara holds a bachelor’s degree in classics and philosophy from the University of Toronto and a doctorate in classics from Harvard University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation.

Matthew Wilkinson

Matthew Wilkinson is a senior manager research analyst for Morningstar Australasia Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. He is responsible for conducting qualitative research on Australian and New Zealand fund managers and their funds.

Before Joining Morningstar in 2015, Wilkinson worked for Propex Derivatives in the fixed-interest and equity futures market as a trader analysing and managing exposures. Prior to that, he had a career in engineering, working on local and overseas projects, most recently in commercial management roles.

Wilkinson holds a master’s degree in applied finance from Macquarie University and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Sydney.

Mike Mulach

Mike Mulach is a senior manager research analyst for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. He covers fixed-income strategies.

Before assuming his current role in 2019, Mulach worked in data and client services as a member of the Morningstar Development Program. Prior to that, he interned as an investment banking analyst at TM Capital and as a wealth management analyst for UBS Financial Services.

Mulach holds a bachelor's degree in economics and art history from Bates College.

Monika Dutt

Monika Dutt is a director of passive strategies research for Morningstar UK Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. She leads the firm's passive strategies EMEA team of four analysts specializing in researching and rating index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds.

Having started her career with Bloomberg, Dutt joined Morningstar in 2015 as a passive strategies analyst. Three years later, she left for Vanguard, where she worked as a senior ETF analyst and then as a portfolio consultant within the firm's portfolio review department. In her role, she was responsible for delivering investment research and insights to Vanguard's institutional and retail intermediary clients.

Dutt holds a master's degree with distinction in data science from University College London.
