Just recently, a team of divers explored the submerged remains of the Titanic--the first such dives in 14 years. What they found: Salt corrosion and bacteria are eating away at the enormous wreck. And scientists say that the ship will continue to deteriorate over time.

The Titanic isn’t the only giant with erosion issues. The wide Morningstar Economic Moat Ratings of more than a dozen large-cap companies we cover are wearing away. In other words, they have negative Morningstar Moat Trend Ratings. The moat trend rating describes how a company's competitive position is changing over time and can be either "positive," indicating the competitive position is strengthening; negative, indicating the competitive position is weakening; or stable.
