The stock market tried to finish the week, and the quarter, with a flourish, but surrendered to persistent worries about earnings. After wandering in the doldrums for most of the month, the major indexes tried to break out Thursday. A couple of ominous profit warnings took care of that.

By Friday the Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 ended not far from where they started the week and quarter, and the Nasdaq had lost more ground. The Dow finished 1.8% down for the week at 10,650.92. The S&P 500 slipped 0.84% to 1,436.51 over the five days and the Nasdaq was down 3.5% at 3,672.82.
