The Week Ahead: Retail Earnings, Data Give Consumer Snapshot
Reports are due this week from a variety of retailers, from home improvement to apparel. Plus, inflation data, industrial production, and housing data.
Jeremy Glaser: For Morningstar, I'm Jeremy Glaser and welcome to The Week Ahead.
We will get a snapshot on the state of the consumer over the next couple of days with both retail earnings and data. A broad spectrum of retailers are due to report including Home Depot and Lowe's, Wal-Mart and Target, Gap and L Brands, discounter TJX, and Best Buy. We'll be watching to see if the broad trends that we've witnessed recently--like positive results for the home improvement players but weaker numbers from apparel firms--continues.
Networking giant Cisco will also provide an update. Retail sales data will provide a broader look on if consumer wallets are still open. The consumer price index data on Thursday will be closely watched for signs that inflation is heating up ahead of the Fed's meeting next month.
Industrial production and some housing data will round out this week's releases.
Stay tuned to Morningstar for our take on these stories.
