Those who buy and sell online are young and affluent, study finds.

Like most "first adopters" of technology, investors who have been brave enough to buy and sell mutual fund shares online are a young, affluent, and well-educated minority, a recent survey shows.

Just 9% of all households that own mutual funds bought or sold their shares online between April 1999 and March 2000, according to a survey by Investment Company Institute, the trade association for the mutual fund industry.
