Mutual-fund companies did a lot of virtual handholding this past week.
As the stock market undulated Monday and Tuesday, investment companies offered calm words to investors through their Web sites. They posted "Volatility Survival Guides" and trotted out venerable investing Brahmins such as Peter Lynch to make soothing analogies to long airplane rides and marathons.
