Kemper Pulls Plug on Two International Funds

Broker-sold clones fail to find an audience.

Come the end of May 2000, Kemper Emerging Markets Income and Kemper International Growth and Income will fold. This resolution was approved at a recent board meeting for the Kemper Global/International Series of funds.

The board's decision isn't surprising, because it doesn't pay to run such minuscule funds. Emerging Markets Income has grown to only $6.2 million in assets in its two-year lifetime, while International Growth and Income has amassed just $5.2 million over the same period. What's more, neither portfolio has succeeded in terms of performance: Both funds trail their respective category averages by wide margins since their December 1997 inception dates.
