Bank One to Shift Focus Away from Credit Cards

Company says corporate banking, consumer lending are keys to future growth.

In a long-awaited meeting with analysts Tuesday, Bank One (ONE) executives outlined a get-well plan for its ailing credit-card division and tried to shift Wall Street's focus to parts of the company that are in better health.

Key executives from the company, including acting CEO Verne Istock, said Bank One will attempt to keep the credit-card customers it already has and grow the company's 2000 earnings through its corporate-banking and consumer-lending divisions.
