Second Quarter in Funds: Gold Funds Thrive on Chaos

Corporate scandals, global strife hurt stocks, but help precious-metals funds.

Gold glittered and property prevailed in the second quarter as investors sought alternatives to equity markets lashed by corporate scandals, bleak earnings, a lurching economic recovery, and the war on terror.

In general, bond funds did better than stock offerings. The average fixed-income fund gained 2.5% during the three-month period ending June 24. Every bond-fund category but two--emerging markets and high yield--posted gains for the period.
