Frequently Asked Questions about Morningstar.com&#

Welcome to our new home page! We redesigned the page to do two things:

  • Load faster
  • Organize information better

Over the past year, we’ve added so much new material—new tools, new statistics, new feature articles—that we’ve outgrown the old home page, which was getting rather bloated. You’ll notice that the new page is much shorter, with more information grouped into drop-down menus. But don’t worry: We haven’t eliminated any information—we’ve just tried to organize it so it's easier to find what you need.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

What happened to the left-hand navigation bar?
Where are the columnists?
Where are the tools?
Where are the articles written by Morningstar analysts?
Where is the market graph?
Where is Dow Jones news?
Where are Stock and Fund Lists (Biggest Gainers, Biggest Losers, Sector Performance, etc.)?

I can't log out from Morningstar.com. What's going on?

What happened to the left-hand navigation bar?
In this area, we’ve grouped information by department to make it easier to find our tools, data, and editorial. Looking for Fund Selector? Find it under Funds. Looking for Stock Analyst Picks? Find it under Stocks.

We used a technology called Flash to collapse the text on the navigation bar so it lists only the main sections of our Web site, such as Stocks, Funds, News, and Portfolio. To see the content within those sections, click on the section’s name and a menu will appear below the name.

Not all Internet browsers have Flash technology included in them, particularly older versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer. Here’s how you can tell if you have Flash installed in your browser: If the left-hand navigation bar on Morningstar.com’s new home page shows a long list of section titles and the content within those sections, you have an older Internet browser. For example, under Portfolio, browsers without Flash display a list of contents such as Create a Portfolio, Edit a Portfolio, and so on. Without Flash, the list cannot be collapsed to show only the heading Portfolio.

If you would like to update your browser and get the most out of Morningstar.com’s new home page, we suggest you download Flash on your computer. If you have a PC and use Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, your browser will work with Flash after the download. For Mac users, you’ll need Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher to work with Flash. For instructions on how to download Flash, click here, or go straight to the download area.

Where are the columnists?
Go to the Find an Article drop-down menu in the Morningstar on the Market column. We’ve grouped all our columnists and articles there.

Where are the tools?
You'll find tools listed in the left-hand navigation bar. Tools related to portfolio—Create a Portfolio, Alerts and Updates, Portfolio X-Rays—are all under the Portfolio heading. Tools related to funds are under the Funds heading. And so on. Instant X-Ray and Asset Allocator are located in the right-hand column. The various tool locations are listed below in the alphabetical listing.

Where are the articles written by Morningstar analysts?
Look in Morningstar on the Market column. The updates that our analysts write about earnings releases, manager changes, and so forth—basically any news that might affect your portfolio—are found in the Analyst Updates section. To find a specific article, go to the Find an Article drop-down menu at the bottom of the Morningstar on the Market column.

Where is the market graph?
On the News page. Just click on the tab called News at the top of the page.

Where is Dow Jones news?
On the News page. To go directly to it from the home page, you can do one of two things: 1) go to the left-hand navigation bar, look under News, and select Dow Jones news, or 2) go to the Morningstar on the Market column, and in the drop-down menu just below the S&P, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq data, select Dow Jones News.

Where are Stock and Fund Lists (Biggest Gainers, Biggest Losers, Sector Performance, etc.)?
In the Today's Stock Movers drop-down menu in the Morningstar on the Market column.

For Most Active Shares, Biggest Gainers, and Biggest Losers choose Today's Stock Movers from the drop-down menu and click Go.

I can't log out from Morningstar.com. What's going on?
When some users click on the "Logout" button and return to the home page, it may appear as though they're still logged in to Morningstar.com. For example, the Log
In/Out button says, "Log Out," and our scrolling message bar is still greeting each of them by name.

If this is happening to you, more than likely you have successfully logged out, but your computer is going back to an earlier version of the home page that was saved in your browser. To confirm that you are in fact logged out, click the "Refresh" button at the top of your browser screen. The page that follows should show that you're logged out. (The Log In/Out button will say, "Log In.")
