Good news on the war front helped spur a market rally this week, although the indexes gave up some of their gains on Friday. In Afghanistan, the Taliban gave up control of key cities, including the capitol city of Kabul, to Northern Alliance troops, and the U.S. and its allies began to prepare for the Taliban's expected surrender.

On Monday, New York-area residents suffered more catastrophic losses after a Dominican Republic-bound American Airlines jet crashed into a Queens neighborhood. Many feared another terrorist attack, but investigators think it was probably an accident. The crash caused declines in airline and travel stocks, but many of the same companies' shares recovered by Friday, when Congress came to some agreement on an airline-safety bill.
